Growing up, my obsession with volcanoes led me to become immersed in research about this eruption and its aftermath, fueling a desire to explore the site and get my hands in the dirt. At 20 years old, within a week of leaving the US for the first time, I got on a train to Naples and found myself standing in the ruins I’d spent my whole life chasing. The experience was surreal and nothing like I’d expected – simultaneously under- and overwhelming, yelled at by Italian men in kiosks trying to sell me coasters and swept up in crowds of tourists. In a moment away from the hoards of people, I sat on an ancient curb in silence and watched Vesuvius looming over the ruins, a now silent time bomb. In that moment the space felt sacred.The paradox of stands selling tacky souvenirs at the entrance of a city buried by a volcanic eruption feels exploitative, bur archaeological tourism finanically supports preservation of the site. These cheap knickknacks are a form of documentation, but the ruins themselves exhibit preservation in a completely different sense. What does it take for our everyday spaces and objects to be viewed as precious, and how would we interact with them differently if they were considered valuable pieces of history? My thesis recontextualizes methods and ethics of preservation and sacred spaces through the lens of archaeology and the exploration of a natural disaster. My goal is to explore documentation and preservation of the mundane through physical artifacts, type, photography, and other narratives. Digging deep into these themes through my childhood passion is a way to learn from my own relationship with the site itself, and unearth new perspectives on why and how we protect and conserve knowledge. It started small (test mail went out to 5-10 of my friends) before opening the subscription up to my Instagram followers, expanding to about 50 subscribers almost overnight. I was only able to keep up with the mail club quintoupling in size for two months before choosing to take a step back from the club. I started the mail club because I had moved cross-country to Utah from New England, and I wanted a creative and fun way to keep in touch with friends, classmates, and peers from other areas of my life. Long-distance connections are tough to keep, even with the usage of social media, and getting an envelope in the mail monthly is always such a fun thing to look forward to. Envelop(e) Club was a way to give more of a purpose to personal design work, and a small fee I charged my subscribers covered the printing and material costs, so I was basically breaking even. Every month’s mail consisted of 3 parts: an 8.5 x 11 print of some sort (a poster, zine, illustration, etc.), a recipe, and a playlist. Each month had a theme based on how I was feeling, the season, happenings in my own life, and conversations I’d been having recently.On top of my full-time ski shop management job at the time, the club just grew a little too fast for me to be able to keep up with. I was designing, trimming, folding, and packing each envelope solo in my bedroom, which proved to be much more time-consuming than I had anticipated. 36 days of type challenge before, but it always seemed like such a huge time commitment (and type design is hard!!!).&nbsp; Last year I was able to complete 26/36 of the challenge...... over the course of about 6 months. This typeface is currently unnamed but was inspired by the imperfection and playfulness found in nature in the spring. I based my forms off of a hand-drawn flower doodle and used that bubbly, wonky shape as a unifying element across the alphabet. This quickly became an exercise in flow and experimentation for me - I only allowed myself a short amount of time to work on each letter, and then I forced myself to shut my laptop and walk away, resulting in a fair amount of letters I was pretty frustrated with. On the whole, this flexed my type muscles in a way that got me excited to continue working with a looser, more experimental type style and got me excited for the next type design challenge (maybe this Simmerr is a NYC-based indie pop/soul and funk group (such good summery songs!) that I worked with to design a tee for their single Parallel. We leaned heavily on vintage tennis club apparel to come up with a bright, fun, and timeless graphic that channels the energy they bring to their music. Retrograded is an indie artist with more of a gritty and electronic-leaning sound. The illustration features Jed, a peer from my time working at the ski shop, and one of the most talented skiers I’ve met. The graphic references the fictional Alta Park Crew: Alta is one of the few mountains in the Salt Lake City area with no manmade park features, yet skiers from all over the world, including athletes from the Freeride World Tour, choose to ski Alta for its challenging terrain, naturally occurring cliff drops, and other similar features. Morgan and I found that though our individual collections weren’t united by any visual qualities, they’re specific to each of our lifestyles and actions, and could be grouped by physicality and function. These collections (30 things I fidget with/30 small items with type on them) are fluid, and could easily change based on our environments and circumstances. We chose to create a digital archive documenting our objects and highlighting their tactile qualities, while intentionally provoking users to fidget, a habit or movement that is traditionally mindless and organic. These objects are mundane and within our reach, but by moving them fully to a digital space, they become just out of reach for viewers. We invoke discomfort by pushing legibility, accessibility, usability, and presentation and organization of content—creating an engaging but mildly frustrating experience for our audience. <img
